Born in Melbourne in 1953, artist Leigh Hobbs has worked across a broad range of media, including painting, ceramics and sculpture. Several of his pieces are held in Australian museums and galleries, including the State Gallery of Victoria, the State Library of Victoria and Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum.
Leigh completed a diploma in art at the Caulfield Institute of Technology in the early seventies, and has worked in various creative fields since then. His early career included a stint at Sydney’s Luna Park as part of a team of artists restoring the 1935 landmark, he has illustrated for newspapers, and since 1977 he has taught art in schools. However, Leigh is best known as an illustrator of children’s books, including the Old Tom series of junior novels, Old Tom’s Holiday (shortlisted for the 2003 Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Picture Book of the Year award), Horrible Harriet (shortlisted for the 2002 CBCA Picture Book of the Year award) and, most recently, Old Tom: Man of Mystery. |
