Ann James
Ann James was an art teacher who moved into designing and illustrating education publications before establishing herself as an award-winning illustrator of children’s books. Ann works in a variety of media, from watercolour to pen and ink, collage and pastels.

Now one of Australia’s best-known illustrators, many of Ann’s books have been published around the world, including The Midnight Gang (by Margaret Wild), A Coat of Cats (by Jeri Kroll) and the Penny Pollard series (by Robin Klein). Her first book with Little Hare, Little Humpty, was named an Honour Book in the Early Childhood category of the 2004 Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book of the Year awards. Her most recent book is The Way I Love You with David Bedford (Little Hare Books, 2004).

In 2000 Ann was awarded the Pixie O’Harris Award for Distinguished Service to Australian Children’s Literature (shared with her partner Ann Haddon, co-director with Ann of Books Illustrated, a unique gallery for book illustration and a children’s bookshop). In 2003 Ann received the Dromkeen Medal, awarded annually to an Australian citizen for work that “makes a significant contribution to the appreciation and development of children’s literature”.

Ann lives in Melbourne, Australia.
